Frequently Asked Questions
How often is new content added?
New verses arrive around the first of each month as part of our ongoing translation project. These appear in the app as a red badge on the book icon showing the number of new verses available.
When will the full translation be complete?
Our six-year project targets completion by 2031. However, a “selected” version will arrive much sooner. By summer 2027, a first pass through all four books will translate the 284 most influential verses and their commentary — the passages most quoted and discussed in the scholarly tradition and by readers. This means the app will become quite functional throughout 2026.
Current status:
Book One (Great Learning): Complete. Translated in full due to importance.
Book Two (Discourses/Analects): First pass will cover 166 verses (33%).
Book Three (Book of Mengzi): First pass will cover 74 verses (28%).
Book Four (Doctrine of the Mean): Will be translated in full.
From there, we will work through the remaining 520 verses for completion by 2031.
How does Scholar Pack pricing work?
Scholar Pack is a one-time purchase. The price is currently lower, based on the percent completion of the translation. As more content is added, the price will increase toward its final target. Scholar Pack holders receive all future content updates at no additional cost. This is a long-term project with the strongest commitment, but you only pay for what has been completed thus far.
How do I restore my Scholar Pack purchase?
Go to Settings → Restore Purchases. Your purchase is tied to your Apple ID and will restore automatically.
Does the app require an internet connection?
No. Four Books is fully offline after download. It works much like a dictionary app, in that once translated, the content does not change and does not require a connection. This also means you can use it even in remote locations, and the app consumes less battery.
Can we get normal copy to clipboard functionality please?
Yes. Surprisingly, the seemingly simplest function can end up the most difficult. Our current “copy whole commentary section” implementation is a workaround. We need to refactor foundational elements in the app’s text engine in order to select text using standard “handles.” We are working on it.
Is there an Android version coming?
Maybe.
